[RC] Automatic Transmissions - k s swigart

I'd be interested in hearing from folks that trailer with automatic
?transmissions. ?Like Carla said - what do you do going down a
?long hill to avoid riding the brakes?

Well...with a regular automatic transmission, you can manually downshift it (to
first or second) so it won't go into a gear any higher than what you put it in.

With my Allison transmission, it pretty much downshifts for you.

I didn't want the automatic transmission when I got my truck, but this had more
to do with the expense of it than anything else.? I had heard nothing but good
things about the Allison automatic transmission (except, of course, for the
price!).? Unfortunately, you cannot get the Duramax engine with a manual
transmission in California (it has something to do with the smog certification
requirements), and buying it out of state and then importing it into California
would have been a PITA.

However, I don't have any problem with having to ride the brakes going down
hill.? If the transmission doesn't downshift for me, I can do it myself.
