I personally think that if AERC sanctions a specialty ride, that's a good thing. Looking at it from a specifically AERC-centric viewpoint, I believe AERC sanctioning does two things: It adds legitimacy and value to a ride, and it ensures that a minimum level of consideration for the horse will occur.

Think about how different it would have been if the Mongol Derby had applied for and received AERC sanctioning right from the beginning. To me, AERC sanctioning is a stamp of approval, a statement of quality and legitimacy. I only wish everyone who put on a sanctioned AERC ride would blast it out to the world and cement in the public's mind how valuable sanctioning is.
