RE: [RC] [BarefootEnduranceHorses] white powdery/gooey frogs - Linda Cowles
Sounds
like she’s shedding the frog! Frogs shed seasonally (fall and spring)
when hair coats change, so its normal. I show some pictures of frog trimming at
the bottom of my thrush page, http://www.healthyhoof.com/articles/Thrush/Thrush.html
but don’t have any pictures up of shedding frogs…
I’ll
see if I can find some and put up a page.
What
I do is pull the lose frog off and nip it where it resists coming off. Frogs
usually start shedding at the tip, and its common for the frog bulbs to hang on
for a few weeks longer.
My
pictures of my guys Gabbys frog on this Healthy Frog page are immature but very
healthy… they shed about a month before the pictures and are coming back
in nicely.

white powdery/gooey frogs
My Paint mare began to show the slightest hint of being uncomfortable
in her
heels on the concrete so we began to investigate. The hoof and frog looked
mostly normal with no deep central sulcus or collateral grooves, but after
some probing we found some softer areas on the frog along the central sulcus
near the heel. She had some small cracks, looked almost like fine lines. As
we probed deeper, the top layer of the frog was loose and smelly underneath.
It was not black and slimy like I normally see with thrush. It was more like
a crumbly/powdery to cheesy texture and white. This is only on the frog
itself. It is not sole flaking or shedding but down in the frog. Per the
vet, we are treating like we would thrush. Has anyone else seen anything
like this?
Thanks
