[RC] Magnesium as a calming agent - k s swigart

I'm wanting to put my gelding on both Magnesium and Vit B-1 as
?I'm told both of these help in calming down a spooky/hyper horse

Magnesium will only "calm down a spooky horse" if the horse is low in magnesium
(since one of the signs of hypomagnesmia can be hyper-reactiveness or
hyper-excitability).

If your horse isn't low in magnesium to start with, then adding magnesium won't
calm it down.? In fact, unless your horse has kidney disease, adding magnesium
to the diet of a horse that already has sufficient magnesium, will just make
for lots of magnesium in the urine, since the kidneys just?filter out excess
magnesium.? But if you give too much of it for too long (prolonged
oversupplementation), then it can cause kidney failure.? I don't know how much
is too much for too long.
