About mares... you know, it's the bad ones that give them all a bad  
name.  I bet I've boarded/handled/trained/ridden 150 mares over the  
years, and I think I've ran into four or five who were bitchy in  
heat.  Most of them you could hardly tell, 'cept for a little  
squealing in the pasture.

Personally, I think mares are tougher and take better care of  
themselves. YMMV
