Well, Joe - I got some good news and some bad news. The vest will help
some but when I busted 4 ribs - two clean in half -
a few years ago the MD told me that a vest would not have helped
because the break results from a compression of my body
not from something breaking them. I got launched by a new horse I was
trying and mashed into a bank on the side of the trail. It broke
my ribs on the side as the couldn't bend as far as my body wanted them
to bend.
I did get a vest to use for the time I was coming back from the injury
and wore it religiously every time I rode for about 4 months. However,
come
summer in the SE - it was either die of heat and dehydration or take a
chance of getting launched again. I put the vest away and haven't used
it since.
I know Debbie Parsons always rides with one in the FL heat and humidity
- she must be one hell of a woman. The heat might not be as big an
issue in CO. On the other hand
you could always stay away from amusement parks ;-) .

I never get aboard a horse without a helmet, but I have not worn a vest
to date. And I've cracked ribs twice from riding accidents, it's not
fun. Last week I had a mishap on an amusement-park ride and cracked a
rib again. That helped bring home the point that the ol' bod isn't as
young and resilient as it used to be (and heals more slowly). So I am
beginning my search for a vest that will fit me well, and I plan to
always wear it when riding as well.
