Title: “Many people consider the things government does for them to be
social
progress but they regard the things government does for others as
socialism
Breaks in the physical activity is quite common in most sports. A
pitcher in baseball has to keep his arm loose while his team is
batting. There are formatted breaks in basketball, football, etc.
When I was in track it was not uncommon to have a meet where you might
have to run a heat maybe two - even in distances and a final. Then you
might have to come back and run a leg of a relay. You had to keep loose
warm between the times.
The bottom line in endurance - the hold is for the welfare of the
horse. I think holds can be too long. IMO an hour hold is two long. I
would rather see 3 - 40 minute holds account for two hours of holds
than 2 - 1 hour holds.

Having done several "long runs" myself, I agree with that. If I was doing a
50K or a 50-miler and had to stop for 40 minutes at each checkpoint, I'd
have cooled down and stiffened up to the point I couldn't move!! However, I
know that I personally need to eat frequently during events like this...
horses don't... and sometimes a horse may need some time to get into
eating/drinking mode during his hold periods. I guess there are pros and
cons however you look at it...
