RE: [RC] NC/Holds - EnduroGalHaving done several "long runs" myself, I agree with that. If I was doing a 50K or a 50-miler and had to stop for 40 minutes at each checkpoint, I'd have cooled down and stiffened up to the point I couldn't move!! However, I know that I personally need to eat frequently during events like this... horses don't... and sometimes a horse may need some time to get into eating/drinking mode during his hold periods. I guess there are pros and cons however you look at it... -----Original Message----- From: ridecamp-owner@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:ridecamp-owner@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Joe Long Sent: Tuesday, September 15, 2009 12:08 PM To: Ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: Re: [RC] NC/Holds On Sep 15, 2009, at 9:57 AM, <paul@xxxxxxxxxxx> <paul@xxxxxxxxxxx> wrote: ... My question would be, what is the concept that we need two holds in a 50 miles ride based on? Is there any research to support that belief? I don't think so, it's mostly tradition. I've long felt that the forced holds are more for the riders' benefit than the horses; that is, a lot of riders want them. Do you know of any Marathons that make the runners stop for a half- hour halfway through? I don't. A runner who is training avoids stopping, if traffic forces him to stop he will "run in place" while waiting. It seems to me that every time a horse stops for more than a couple of minutes his system begins winding down and has to crank up again when he starts back. -- Joe Long jlong@xxxxxxxxxxxxx =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
