Re: [RC] Bitting Issue - stephanie teetertrue story:at last weekend's Old Selam ride we started early (I'm partially dysfunctional in the early morning), it was still fairly dark when we got going, and I set out to do a mid-pack ride on Jaziret. He's always been a challenge to rate, and he was plenty strong starting out. But he was doing some odd head/bunching moves for the first several miles as I tried to rate him - I wasn't sure if he was trying to buck or if something was bothering him... but the miles settled him out eventually. About half way through the first 20 mile loop I was riding along happily with a friend, Chris Samson, Jaziret was actually being very good, working better off my seat and legs than usual. We were chatting away and Chris asked me what type of bit I was using. "oh, that's the Myler combination bit - it has the rawhide noseband and curbchain and actually applies nose and poll pressure as well as the fairly mild bit - and I can attach the rains in a snaffle position, or use the shanks for a little curb action, it's worked well for this horse, blah blah blah". A minute of trotting, then Chris said "but... there's nothing in his mouth". !!! what? I looked down and sure enough the bit was dangling below his chin!! And this is a horse that makes me want to fasten my seatbelt when I get on, and make sure the reins are strong and I would NEVER consider starting a ride with him in a hackamore! So much for certainty :) Here's a photo - http://www.endurance.net/horses/jaziret_bitless.jpg Steph =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
