Re: [RC] need advice about spooking/bolting - Barbara McCraryOK, here goes....The first time my little horse Courage saw an Elephant Seal bull, all 19 feet long and 7-8 tons of him, on the sand at Ano Nuevo State Reserve on the CA coast, Courage thought "no big deal, it's a log." He wasn't a spooky horse at all. Then suddenly, the log reared up, dropped his long nose into his throat, and exhaled pulsing bursts of air into the sounding chamber of his throat. This is typical male Elephant Seal communication technique. The "log" sounded like the horn of a diesel semi and poor Courage jumped and asked, "WHAT was THAT?!!" Ever after, he spooked at large things in strange places, notably a large rock in High Rock Canyon on the Applegate-Lassen Trail 5-day ride.
