Interesting....my very thoughts about our Swanton
Pacific. I've voiced the exact same words over and over, when we have 12
riders attend. It has been heartbreaking to put as much effort into
clearing trails and managing the ride as Lud and I have done and then have 12
people show up. Last year, with Tevis cancelled and our announcement
that it would be our last SP, we had lots of riders. But given our age,
energy level (or lack of it) and the fact that people will always go to Tevis
rather than another 100-mile ride, we just retired from managing rides.
And, surprise....I haven't missed it at all.
Aware people tell me it's the mystique.
And because of its legend, Tevis definitely has
mystique.
I have been trying to figure out what the main
differences are between the Big Horn and the Tevis...trying to figure out
why more people don't make a goal of the big Horn instead of, or as well as
the Tevis..And why it seems people who have done the Tevis are more apt to
go try it again than those who have done the Big Horn (might not be the
case.) For me the big horn is a much more beautiful ride, the trail is
as difficult as the tevis, not nearly as scary as far as drop offs. Lots of
other differences..maybe people who go back to the Tevis like the security
of all the people, both on the trail and the volunteers. You're pretty much
on your own on the Big Horn. Sure would be great if more people would have
the Big Horn on their Bucket List!
