[RC] Tevis Obstacles and finish times - Jonni

The first horse across the finish line after 100 miles of trail, finished at 10:20 PM, the last horse to finish on time, did so at 5:15AM. So in a time span of a 7 hour difference from first to last to finish, riders figured out how to do so before the clock ran out not only at the end, but at the check points with cut off times. If being at the back of the pack of a field of 150 to 200+ horses means you might not be able to make up a few min., maybe you need to reconsider if Tevis is the ride for you. Starting last does not mean you can not pass anyone for 100 miles. Shesh, there is a huge amount of trail out there that is two track, jeep roads, and even dirt forest service type roads. Some make it sound like if you are in Pen 2, and towards the back, you should plan on finished back in the back of the pack 100 miles later.

I have yet been to a ride where all the horses line up stirrup to stirrup and go across the start line together. If that is what folks want, maybe they should take up racing on the track, with starting gates, smooth surfaces with no obstacles, lights at night to guide their way, and Mint juleps after the race.

This is endurance. Deal with what the ride and trail gives you that day....
