[RC] Thumps - Kathleen A. CrothersAt a tough, hilly, rocky in humid Ok yrs. ago my horse was thumping slightly at the 1st vet check. Guess he wasn't the only one that day. I was told to give him electrolytes and come back for a recheck at the end of the hold. He was fine then and I was told to go on out on trail. I had tried to give him electrolytes after about 2 hrs. on trail on the fisrt loop and the commercial mix I was using would not come out of the syringe. It was in there like concrete. On the 2nd loop I had new electrolytes, again the same commercial mix in a syringe, on my saddle bag and tried to give some on trail. Same thiing happened again. Luckily I did have some powdered ones at the vet check that I mixed with applesauce and gave him them at the vet check but had nothing on trail with me that worked on the long loop. Ended up finishing ok and the horse was fine but we slowed down a lot due to trail, storms, etc. Never had that problem again. I've never used commercial electrolytes in a syringe again either!
