Re: [RC] Strangles in SE region - Kathy MayedaI was boarding at Lightfoot Stables when a horse came back from 20 Mule Team several years ago and carried strangles back and infected others in his pasture. I did think there was some mention on RC checking to see if others at 20 Mule Team I don't think this horse ever got sick. There was a temporary quarantine pen set up for those that were sick, complete with bleach buckets, and a vaccination clinic set up right away. To tell you the truth, I was totally on the fence whether to vaccinate or not because the vaccination is not that efficacious. Plus I figured that my horses probably have a little bit of immunity, having lived at places where there were active cases. I ended up vaccinating because I figure at a public boarding stables there would be alot of people pointing fingers if you didn't vaccinate and your horse got sick. After Lightfoot changed management, I moved my horses twice and each time was required to have strangles vaccine, although neither place demanded any written proof. It's a very yucky disease, but survival rate is a lot higher than rabies or botulism!
