I got an email reply from the Mongol Derby people today with two attachments (a horse welfare press release dated today, and a horse welfare logistics announcement undated). They are too long to copy and paste into this email but I can forward to anyone interested.

They say that "the welfare of the horses used in the Mongol Derby has always been at the forefront" of their planning.
