Re: [RC] SCCHA Endurance Educational Ride - Beverley H. Kane, MDDitto to what Kathy said. Codigh and I were the "someone" that she and Drako ushered to our first camping experience and an awesome time. Thank you, Kathy and Drako! Cross posting from our local endurance list: -------- Many, many thanks to Pat Verheul, Becky Glaser, Julie Suhr, Maryben Stover, Ildi Nadasdy, Elisabet Hiatt (my group's ride leader!), Debbie, Donald, Linda and everyone else who worked to make this a most edifying and delightful experience. This clinic--with its lectures, vet in, ride, and vet out--meant more to me in a way than my 50 mile rides on other people's veteran endurance horses. It was Codigh's first camping trip and our first taste of endurance and he did awesome, thanks to the above named people + Kathy Mayeda and the dashing (in the handsome sense!) Drako. Codigh has been a difficult horse and I didn't know what to expect, but he had a great time and will be a fine endurance horse. EDPP everywhere and a goo' boy for Dr. Becky, DVM (devoted vet-equivalent mentor). ------ Ildi is an "emancipated junior" rider mentored by Becky Hart and Maryben Stover. A great athlete and a great spokesman for our sport! And how cool is it to have a completion certificate signed by Julie Suhr ? Hopefully he'll be ready for the next one before he gets too old to do endurance! I instead hauled someone to the Santa Cruz County Horseman's Assocation for their endurance education ride. Even though clinic was geared towards those who want to experience endurance for the first time, I still learned some things that I forgot or didn't consider before about trail safety, first aid, what to do at a ride camp (or NOT to do) and vet check procedures. The speakers were excellent! We rode in Henry Cowell State Park which was quite beautiful and fun with some technical single track trails and some wider trails with excellent footing. There was something for everyone. It was a really good experience for hot headed Drako as he had to pace with experienced endurance horses. I expected that this ride would be more for Drako's education than my own, but I thing we both benefited! Consider going to an educational clinic, this one or another one in your area. Even if you have some experience, you might consider taking your inexperienced horses to these events as well. I was surprised as to how much I enjoyed it, and welcomed the refresher course.
