[RC] Horse friendly land owner needs support - Lari Shea

Willard Jackson owns 1650 acres of mountainous redwood forests and open cattle grazing pastures overlooking the Pacific ocean just north of Fort Bragg, California.  Will has always been generous to the extreme in allowing Endurance Races, the Ride & Tie Championship Race, and organized trailrides to ride through his spectacular property.  He even hires crews to keep the trails open and safe to ride.

In the quarter century Will has owned this land, our good neighbor has actively protected those 1650 hundred beautiful acres from development, logging, and subdivision.   He now wants to build a small B&B, which he's calling The Inn at Newport Ranch.  His purpose and goal in building a small Inn on 3 of his acres is to create just enough income to pay the taxes and upkeep for the entire acreage, so that his heirs will not feel pressured to log the redwood forests or sell off the lands to developers.  He wants to preserve this land as a whole for the future.

The Inn will offer 5 - 7 rental units open to the public and for wedding events.  Some units will have 2 bedrooms, suitable for families, with a total of 9 bedrooms in the rental pool.  Structures will be designed to be subordinate to the natural environment, using earth tone colors that blend with the surroundings, and landscaped to screen the proposed structures to the maximum extent possible to protect and preserve public views.  In the past, the town of Newport housed over a thousand residents... all the buildings except one home burned more than 50 years ago.  That one home was used as a B&B for a dozen years in the mid-80's to the mid-90's.

Will needs letters of support for his project to be sent to:

Robert Merrill, District Manager
California Coastal Commission
710 E Street, Suite 200
Eureka, CA 95501

Copies of the letter should be sent to: Alan Block, Esq.
1880 Century Park east, Suite 415
Los Angeles, CA 90067-1604
E-mail: alan@xxxxxxxxxxxx
Fax #: (310) 552-1850

Thoughts you might include in your letter:  That the Inn will provide a unique lodging opportunity for visitors;  the project provides one of only a few such lodging opportunities in this area; and/or that the Inn resurrects an earlier, visitor-serving use while maintaining the cattle ranch operation and character.

Thanks for your support!

Lari
