Re: [RC] AZ - New, Fast-Evolving Rabies Virus Found - Kathy Mayeda

I totally agree with you about the inherent danger of giving
vaccinations. It seems like I'm hearing more and more horses reacting
to routine vaccinations. I don't like giving Strangles vaccinations
but am required to because boarding facilities in our area require it
upon entering the facility. I haven't vaccinated for strangles since
because they probably have some low level exposure to strangles from
being at boarding facilities and therefore have some acquired
immunity.

However, since Rabies is such a deadly disease that can be prevented,
I will vaccinate because my horses are exposed to wildlife while
living in their pastures. I am a little bit less concerned for some
reason to vaccinate against the other communicable diseases. I am
not vaccinating for Rabies this year, because I did last year and my
gut feeling is that they will have enough immunity from being
vaccinated last year.

A healthy immune system will go a long way to preventing most diseases
however being bit by a rabid animal is most likely deadly without
vaccination.

Every vaccination (for critter or human) has risks associated with it.
?Toxins can be introduced into the body (mercury has been a common one), and
some studies show that there may be a relationship between vaccinations and
the increase in auto immune diseases. ?Further, there is always the risk of
anaphylaxis from shots.

While the potential for damage from any of the above may be small, and the
potential for serious damage or death without vaccination may be high, the
risks nevertheless should always be factored in to every decision to
vaccinate. ?Even the most common of veterinary and medical procedures have
resulted in death (I've been witness to that).and that's what all those
routine warnings are about in the advertising and on the product labels.

I'm not saying don't get horses vaccinated for rabies, but rather that
deciding to give vaccinations isn't without potential negative consequences.
