I've been reading about low carb diets for horses -
understand you can't really feed a low carb diet - but can try to use feeds
lower in sugar and higher in fat. Any feeds you suggest? any nationally
available type feeds? or local based ones in North Texas? looking to increase
fat/weight on horse who is slightly hard keeper, but keep down susceptibility
toward tying up based on diet. Have cut back any competitions for several months
and will slowly build up LSD base again doing short pleasure trail
rides...
Also Smarpak offers this product: Metaboleeze delays the onset of fatigue in intensely
worked horses. Contains chromium, B complex vitamins and organic trace minerals.
Strenuous exercise and high grain diets increase the excretion of chromium in
the urine of equine athletes and leads to depletion of chromium in the body.
Anecdotal evidence suggests chromium supplementation may positively impact
horses prone to exertional rhabdomyolysis or tying-up. Also: magnesium
3000...contains Corn gluten meal, magnesium oxide, magnesium proteinate,
potassium chloride, diatomaceous earth, soybean oil, calcium
propionate, natural and artificial flavors.
PS. Rebecca, if you're reading
this, hi! and email me. we're watching the derby at my house this
weekend.
