Re: [RC] Dogs On Horseback - Dot Wiggins

When I was a kid, a long time ago, we got a Border Collie type puppy. We were riding all over, all day, every day, bareback sometimes. Being kids the puppy had to go with us. He was several months old and pretty tough but he got tired so I had someone boost him up behind me. He had his front feet on the cantle, hinds on the edge of the saddle blanket, and his head under my arm. He rode that way a lot. When he was bigger I could ride next to the roadside bank and he would jump over onto my horse.. I used to have, maybe still do, a photo on Nifty laying on Nibs' butt behind the saddle while we were having lunch.

I've seen several tired cow dogs behind the saddle or perched on the swells in front.

Dear Riders,

How many of you out there have dogs that will ride with you on horseback? If you do, would you tell me how that came about, how they ride, and if you have to have something spercial for them to hold on to?

My terrier is a little fireplug. Not fat, just stocky and muscular. She is about the size of most 8 - 12 pound dogs and weighs 20 (thighs Arnold S. would drool over). When I went riding with her recently, she really got overheated and so I would like for her to be able to take a break on the horse from time to time to prevent that. My other dog is a Border Collie with more stamina than any of that breed I have ever seen (and I have had a lot of them).

Thanks for your help,
Benedikte
