[RC] What's the quintessential ride in your region? - Angie FuraI just finished Julie Suhr's book Ten Feet Tall, Still and it reignited my hunger to experience new, exciting places. I really enjoyed hearing the stories about riding in different countries and with different cultures. My budget and vacation days probably won't allow me to ride overseas anytime soon, but I would love to see other parts of America and Canada (especially Canada - I've always wanted to ride there!). I'm lucky that there are plenty of AERC rides that I can attend to help me explore new trails. I'm hoping Ridecamp can help me identify the quintessential rides in each region that I should put on my list of things to do in the coming years.
If you had to pick one ride that is the essence of your region, what would it be? For example, I would pick Million Pines as the quintessential ride for the Southeast. This region is large and varied, but Million Pines has what I would consider the typical terrain, trail configuration, basecamp set up, vet check set up, and veterinarian and ride management style of the region. In my opinion, if you want to experience riding endurance in the Southeast, Million Pines would be the ride to go to!
Since my vacation time is limited, I wouldn't be able to haul my own horses to rides in the regions farthest from my home in Tennessee. Julie Suhr's book gave me another idea, a sort of endurance exchange program. I have two sane horses. I would consider letting someone from another region ride one of them with me here in the Southeast, if they would return the favor. I would be willing to pick them up at the airport, put them up at my house pre and post ride, and take them to the ride with me in my rig. I would like to ask for the "exchange" rider to split diesel, generator gas, and propane expenses and to pay for their entry fee and food expenses in full. This idea isn't fully baked yet, but if anyone is interested, please let me know!
