Re: [RC] OT - Australian Shepherds - Barbara McCrary
We've had Aussies over the past 50+ years, interspersed
with a few Border Collies. BCs are by far the most obsessed workers and
would go crazy without a job. OTOH, the Aussies we have had were
fairly mild about working, unless we actually asked them to do something.
One of ours used to go with our daughter (2nd grade) as she walked a mile to the
school bus, and when she got on the bus he turned around and came
home. The one we have now has been obsessed with only one thing...going
riding or walking with me. If the cattle get into the yard by mistake,
then he runs them out, but he never obsesses over it. I should think that
if the Aussie you plan to get has plenty of exercise and gets to go riding with
you, she should be happy. We're not talking Queensland Heelers here...they
are known as "land sharks," heel biters, including people's heels. I
think Aussies are my favorite dogs for a ranch.
Over the years I've noted alot of dog owners on this list. I
have 7.5 acres, 5 horses and 2 other dogs (boxer, lab mix). A friend
wants her australian shepherd to have a 'job'. Right now the dog lives
in a house in a neighborhood with zero exercise.
What can anyone tell me about Australian Shepherds that I wouldn't have
already read? I know they need a job, they are 1 person dogs and they
herd other animals. Other pros and cons regarding the horses and other
dogs? It is a neutered female, 5 years old.
