RE: [RC] Platinum Performance - Sheila A. WalshIt is my understanding that fat stabilization is done with cheap tocopherols (Vit E) added to the product. No hour of life is wasted, spent in the saddle. "Churchill" -----Original Message----- From: ridecamp-owner@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:ridecamp-owner@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Susan E. Since this has the ground flax in it does it need to be kept frozen? Or have they found a way to modify it so that the flax will not loose it's omega 3's? Shannon The Platinum Performance people recommend a shelf life of around 4-5 months or thereabouts. I don't believe they've done anything specific to 'stabilize' it, and I tend to be a little suspicious of other manufacturers claims of having truly done so. PP is very good about keeping their supplies very small and very fresh (the bucket you ordered was probably manufactured the day or two before, as opposed to many supplements in the feed stores that may be many months old, if the layer of dust is any indication). I don't think it needs to be frozen per se, but anything to reduce heat, light and frequent infusions of fresh air will protect its shelf life and keep the omegas and other fat-sol;uble vitamins as intact as possible. I buy it by the 125-lb barrel, keep it in a cool and shady area on my back porch and if I don't expect to be able to use it up within about 90 days, then I do try to put it into big Ziploc freezer bags and keep as much as possible in a frig or freezer. Something they may or may not have mentioned on the website, which is a handy cost-saver. If you order the big barrel, but can't use that much by yourself, try to co-op among other horse owners in your area. As you will have noticed, the shipping on the 25-lb bucket is substantial, but shipping is free on the 125-lb barrel, and if you spread the price among several people, the price per pound comes down considerably. I make a run to Home Depot for five gallon plastic buckets and lids, split it up via the trusty old dairy scale and everyone is happy. Okay, except for my husband, who has to resign himself to picking his way through the living room while it's full of assorted buckets, scales, scoops and an unimaginably contented wife playing pattycake. <g> FWIW, I like to add additional vitamin E, biotin, selenium and Cosequin to the daily baseline supplement, so that they are getting 1000 IU vit E per day, 25 mg biotin twice a day and selenium yeast based on each horse's needs based on their lab results and current work level. I sometimes also add a bit of a probiotic supplement (Yea-Sacc) if I happen to have some around, but don't consider it a requirement.
