RE: [SPAM] [RC] Overdue Mare - heidiAny suggestions would be welcome on an overdue mare. She was bred February 12th, 2007 and was due January 25th. She is acting ok, but I don't feel the foal move. She has a hard udder and no milk in her nipples. I bred her and she was two weeks late but I felt movement in her mother. When does one start worrying and call a vet? This is an Arabian mare, first foal, bred to an Arabian and she is 10 years old. She's not "overdue"--she's just "past average." :-) Remember that mares have the most variable "normal" gestation range of any of our domestic animals, and that "normal" is anywhere from 305 days to 395 days. (I have personally had mares carry up to 383 days...) Winter foals tend to be carried longer than summer foals, colts average a few more days than fillies, and some family lines are particularly prone to long gestations. (I have one family that tends to average a year...) If she is eating well and feeling good, I wouldn't worry too much. If she seems at all depressed, or goes off feed, then by all means call your vet and have her checked. But she is still well within the normal range, particularly for this time of year.
