Re: [RC] Desperate Times for Horse Owners and for Horses - Sisu West Ranch
"...Ed, you speak of having a local slaughterhouse for horses..."
Not according to the story in the St. Paul Dispatch
Pioneer Press when they did go out of business.
I do agree that they will not come back to
bad.
Actually, much of the marginalization of horse slaughter
horses and decline in human consumption in the USA goes back to before
WWII. There were stories running around that butchers were trying to pass
off horse meat as beef. The result is that laws, at least in MN, did not
allow a shop sell both beef and horse. The laws also forced horse
slaughter to be separate facilities.
Of course as with all specialty businesses, with a
declining customer base the economics become iffy.
I do know that Japan stopped importation of US beef
because of Mad Cow. They now have inspectors in USA to keep their "beef"
pure.
I have never run into any stories about European Union
meat import regulations/ checking. I severely doubt that they allow a
loophole "poisoning" their citizens. As this is not really my fight, I do
not intend to research European Union meat importing regulations, but surely
would if this concerned me. Can you point me towards the regulations or
articles decrying a lack of regulation in the responsible Europen
press?
There is a vast difference between, deciding you like
weanling horse and thus raise one for your own personal consumption, and doing
the same thing on a commercial scale to get income. We raise chickens for
eggs and meat. We do not kid ourselves. Even discounting the time
and investment, these products are more expensive than we could
purchase.
