RE: [RC] Dog training and horses - Jackie Causgrove

First, you need to have your dog under control from
the ground before you ever get on your horse. Also
you need to have your dog trained to voice commands.

Since your pup is 8 months, this isn't going to be
perfect. But still basic commands and off leash work
should have reliable results.

If not, you won't be able to control your dog from
your horse. Depending upon where you live/ride etc,
your dog could get into a situation that you will need
reliable control.

The suggestion to have an older dog with your younger
dog is a good one; as dogs definately do learn from
one another. Although riding with dogs that do get
underfoot will teach your dog the same.

Regardless though, you still need to have control of
your pup when riding. So the obedience training needs
to be there (it doesn't ned to be formal obedience
training. just as long as the dog knows, understands
and reliably repsonds to the commands).

Oh, I've trained a lot of dogs from the obedience ring
to obtaining Schutzhund titles (usually thought of as
police dogs type of work; although that's kind of
misunderstood), to water rescue etc.

And obviously make sure that your pup understands
horses as well (and since she is part Border
Collie/Rott mix) that she isn't going to want to herd
and/or guard the horses when you are riding or herd
rabbits etc......

Cheers on your training!
Jackie
