Re: [RC] WEC trails - Steph Teeter

Regarding the course for the US event in 2010. There was serious consideration for holding the Endurance event over more challenging terrain - specifically the area that the 2008 NC was held at (Daniel Boone National Forest) which is I think about an hour away from the WEG venue. But there are a lot more considerations for WECs than just the trail.

Transportation and hotel proximity : if 30 nations participate we're looking at between 500 and 1000 people that will need hotel facility, and transportation/rental cars, and restaurants, etc. The farther the trail is from stables the more difficult it is for people (and horses) to get back and forth.

Another real issue is stabling - horses will be flown in from around the world and will have to be quarantined according to their origin up until the race starts. They will need to have separate stables and also separate training tracks. The stables are at the venue for reasons of safety, security and practicality. Treatment facilities for horses are also at the venue. Horses would have to be transported the start and finish, after eliminations, and if treatment was required.

Another issue is being 'part of the WEG' so that spectators, press, etc can experience endurance as well as jumping, dressage, etc.

As far as Money - yes, there is no doubt that this is a factor. You can't do an event like this without sponsors and sponsors want their name plastered all over every aspect of the event. But I don't think they care what kind of trail the horses traverses as much as how visible their name is. And a central venue provides much more sponsor visibility than if it were spread out.

Hi Steph,

If the above two statements are true and if a third statement is true, ie, that the proposed venue for the WEC in the US is a bunch of flat loops, then what you are saying is that the USA FEI people are defying "a lot of people in the FEI influential circle" to put on a flat race that is favored by the sheiks.

Why would they do that? Money maybe? Stupidity maybe? What?
