I have a friend who "collects" older horses :)

She used to use Adequan.  In the hopes of saving some (a lot of) money, 
 she went generic.  But the results were distinctly sub par.  She is 
back to using Adequan.

Perhaps she used the wrong generic or perhaps Adequan is formulated in a 
way that makes it uniquely effective.

I would make a *very* specific and detailed list of the problems that 
prompted you to try Adequan.  This is your baseline.  Then use the 
product for 6 months and keep careful notes on your horse's  attitude, 
way of going and especially the *degree* of any improvements to the 
original problems.  Then switch to a generic, continuing to keep 
detailed notes.  That should tell you both what improvements in your 
horse you see with Adequan and also whether your horse does as well on 
the substitute.
