[RC] Scratches solution - Kristi SchaafJody wrote: So, to all you vendors out there, send me a sample if you think you have something to stop the super scratches from Hell. ___________________________ Jody, I'm not a vendor but I DID find something that FINALLY worked on hubby's horse. The horse got his first dose of scratches a year ago in southern Iowa clay-based muck. I got rid of them with a commercial product. Then, this summer, at home, he got a full-blown case that would NOT go away. The swelling was bad enough that I almost called the vet. The sores were very deep, large and painful and he got really defensive about having his hind feet soaked. As soon as I got the scabs off and treated, the next day they'd be back, thicker than ever. I tried every commercial product I could find and nothing helped. Then one day it occurred to me to try a homemade thrush remedy (props to Pete Ramey for it) since the pathogen was probably similiar. And it worked! It took awhile, but the first change I saw almost immediately was that the red angry skin calmed down considerably. Every night I rubbed the mixture on the scabs, and the concoction helped me to gently scrape the scabs off, a layer at a time. It took approximately three or four weeks to get the deepest sores completely healed, but he's now all better now with no scarring (which I was sure he'd have as the original sores were BAD). The magic concoction? Equal parts of athlete's foot cream (ONLY the kind that contains clotrimizole) and triple antibiotic, and a few ounces of tea tree oil. I thoroughly mixed them all together in a baggy with a little bit of water to help them integrate better, then cut a corner of the baggy and drained the mixture in a container. Pretty cheap and very effective. Best wishes - scratches SUCK.
