Re: [RC] IV's - Truman PrevattMake no mistake there are risk from ANY invasive procedure. As Angie points to - there are horses that have scared jugular veins from IV's to the point the vein is lost functionally. Infection can be introduced - which I personally know a case where that happened.Clearly if IV's are required to save a horse - they should be used since the risk from the IV is less than the risk to the horse without IV's. But one has to wonder about the use of IV's to rapidly rehydrate the horse so it can race is in the best interest of the horse. Make no mistake these horses were not on IV's because they were required as a treatment - they were on IV's to short cycle the normal rest period required to get the ready to race. My question is - is that in the best interest of the horse and is that we in the AERC want to see as common practice. Think about how you would feel if you arrive to ridecamp on Thursday afternoon and see 20 horses hooked up to IV's as the riders prepare for the race on Saturday. Truman Anna Wolfe wrote:
