RE: [RC] Disappearing 100's & Race of Champions - heidi

Maybe I'm the odd one out (as I often seem to be), but ROC held absolutely no interest for me.  I never had any desire to attend it, and never did.  The 100s have always been a draw in their own right.  I only wish I had done more of them, and I hope that one day I might be in a position to do one again.  I've done as many as four in one season.  Some of Tom Noll's previous comments come to mind.  The memories of riding along in a "bubble" with my horse in the darkness, and the sort of bonding that occurs in that moment, will be with me always.  That, and the thrill of crossing the finish line in the dark, even when there is almost no one there to welcome you but knowing that you've conquered the course, are "highs" that one just doesn't find anywhere but on a 100.

Per Bruce's request, though, if I were to cite one "incentive" that did encourage me do the four in one season, it was AERC offering a year-end overall points championship.  With the demise of that, much of my desire to compete at that level went out the window.

Just to echo what Cindy said about the Race of Champions.  It's what got me to start doing 100's in the late 80's.  I remember LOTS of riders doing 100's just so they could qualify for the ROC.  And yes, I'm sure it cost a TON of money, but Susan was also great at getting BIG sponsors.  Like a horse trailer as an award for 1st place (won by Becky & Rio).  The entry fee wasn't cheap either......but people were willing to pay it, because it was a GREAT event.   With the right marketing strategy and people, maybe AERC could replicate it someday.  All it takes are some BIG sponsors!

Just my 2 cents worth!
