RE: [RC] Looking to breed for GUARANTEED traits youwant? Uh really? - heidi

I'll betcha neither of your parents was purposefully bred to be a consistent breeder, either.  Just as most of the crappy horses being offered up for free or being euthanized or going to slaughter are the result of haphazard breeding prompted by a "look" or a show record, but with no thought whatsoever given to consistency of traits in the pedigree.

I've bred for 35 years, and have usually come a lot nearer to what I want by doing so than by combing through the scads and scads of marginal horses that are available out there.  The only exception to that is to go to the handful of breeders who are smart enough to do the same, and who occasionally have something available.

Never mind the fact that I can raise them the way I want them raised, and don't have to deal with other people's management issues.

Guarantees?  No.  But better odds?  Absolutely.

"Well, considering that we are now in times difficult enough that people
are giving away good horses, turning them loose and even putting them to
sleep, why, I wonder would you want to BREED another
one?"

Touche' My mom (read mare) had seven of us children. She was a pretty,
blond, tall (5'10) long legged well "put-together" college graduate who
worked hard and was a good "breeder" but had a bad temperament. Three
kids have auburn hair, one is a true redhead and two are brunettes. Only
two of us are college graduates and several of the kids fall into a
range from VERY successful to almost on welfare. I am the only one who
has successfully "bred" to have "live" children. Three have had
fertility problems. Three of the kids are fairly easy to get along with
and two are impossible, while two need medical intervention in order to
stabilize their mood swings. We all shared the same father (read stud)
so have the same genes. I'm sure that my grandparents were looking at
both my Mom and Dad and pictured the perfect and brilliant babies they
would have, all with the best "traits" of both parents. My Moms pretty
eyes, my Dads great temperament, her blond hair and his green eyes, her
great work ethic, his sense of humor, her height and long legs. (I'm 5'4
am short-waisted with stubby legs, auburn hair and brown eyes) Ooops! I
have a friend who has a horse breeding farm and TRIES to research and
study the qualities and traits he wants to achieve when breeding and
still doesn't know what the "roll of the dice" is going to give him
until after the colt is really under saddle. Only then does he THINK he
knows what he has. Sometimes you get the good genes along with the bad
genes and THEN what are you going to do with the colt if he really
hasn't got those traits that you were HOPING to have your mare throw?
And what are you going to do with him if he really does possess all of
the physical traits that you're looking for but ends up with the IQ of a
soapdish? Ah Shoot! Another horse that needs to go up for sale at
auction. So I guess I understand the rational of being more apt to
actually find an already started horse with all of the qualities that
you are HOPING your mare and a strange stallion off of the internet
might possess, in an already flooded market. If I were to put : "WANTED:
one 7 year old dark bay Morab mare with one blue eye, must load well,
has been started in ld's with 50 or 100 mile endurance potential. Must
be sweet, doesn't kick or bite. Plays well with others and comes to you
in the pasture. Must be sound with large feet, good bone and no known
veterinary issues.".........I'll betcha that someone here on ride camp
will have a lead within a few days. And all without a stud fee, and a
three year wait to actually climb on board.... Ahh but that is just my
humble opinion too.
