Re: [RC] "Perfect" horse for heavyweight rider? - heidi larson

my gelding is half polish and the rest mostly russian, he's built tanky, has
excellent bone and personality-wise is spooky (so was his mom.) When I first
did some rides he was so laid back that I was a bit dissappointed. However, a
few years later and I was worried about control issues when "race brain" kicked
in. (I get off and lead when that happens) and now (7 years from purchse) he
"fairly" rateable in a Mylar snaffle. He has moments where the brain falls out
but generally he's pretty good and I can usually pace him pretty well (or I
still get off and walk, but it's rare these days.) IMO it's better to get the
so-called lazy horses and train speed into them, rather than the other way
around. (I've had both.)

I own a Wiking daughter both parents are Polish imports off
the track and if this mare was any calmer she would trot in
to the finish with her eyes closed and snoring. I have never
owned a calmer horse in my life. I still think you must
judge each horse as an individual how they were handled and
brought along is just as important.

My old fellow was 1/2 Polish - a Witez II grandson, and
while he could
be laid back in the corral, I would still call him
"hot", especially

in a race situation. I still remember him trying to race
the crew
vehicles going down the road past us, and me saying
"Slow down,
dammit!". He was 2 weeks away from his 25th birthday
...

My current horse is pure Polish, and I would judge him as
generally
hotter than Shadow was. He can be very calm - deer and
turkeys
popping out of the bushes don't bother him at all, but
a race? A group
ride? My biggest issue with him right now is 'race
brain'.

So - based on my 2-horse study, I would say that you can
get hot
horses in the Polish lines as much as the others. My
advice would be
to judge the individual horse, and perhaps investigate the
parents,
and any close relatives to get an idea of temperament.

Polish Arabs can be very sturdy, so that route would
likely work. I
don't know about the "hotness" of Polish
horses in general,
but
maybe not so hot as some other lines. Not sure there.
