It is going to depend on your situation.  Not everyone has their own place, so for those of us that board, testing the hay isn't necessarily an option.  In my case, the barn owner buys from a supplier who in turn buys from several growers --- what gets delivered isn't necessarily from one source, even within the same load.  At least, that was the explanation I got.  Not much point in testing that.

I really wonder how practical it is to test hay if you don't buy in quantity.
