OK... I must tattle on myself, I got totally dumped
a few weeks ago thanks to the "frou-frou crochet ear net". I've used them
for several years in the summers, to ward off the flies, with no drama.
Riding his evilness, as usual, he put his head down to scratch his hack on his
knee, as usual, somehow pulled the frou-frou sideways during this process.
Lifted his head to find "a monster" attached to his left eye, and went into a
spin to put a QH to shame... and also his rider.. I did manage to grab it
twice during the spinning, and yank attempting to free it, but there is no
freeing a bowtie in that material while doing a 360 at mach 9... and I convinced
the pony to go faster as the monster was now attempting to choke him.
After my graceless exit, he continued spinning thru the underbrush leaving a
path of destruction for a few minutues, then ran back to mommy to save
him!
There was likely some operator error involved in
the application of the frou-frou, but from now on, the flies can just bite his
crazy little head!
You must not have any bugs where you live. Many endurance
riders use them - I've been on horse camping trips where I could have sold a
carton of them to other campers. Great for gnats or deer flies.
I'll admit I've never been sure why the hunter/jumpers use them but "to
keep the ear plugs in" sounds reasonable.

Ok, what are those things called that hunter/jumpers use that is knit or
crochet, has a tassle hanging on the forehead and covers the horse's ears? I
thought those were to keep the big fuzzy earplugs in. Or are those just for
froo froo appeal? Just curious. Lol Not something you would need for
endurance, I'm sure. :)
