RE: [RC] barefoot trim - Karen StandeferA good barefoot trim is not that different from a good farrier trim. Most competent farriers who trim a barefoot horse will trim it to balance and then radius the edges of the hoof wall (what barefooters call a mustang roll) in order to prevent chipping and also stimulate the inner hoof wall (unpigmented hoof wall). In addition it is a no-no to remove ANY sole in the front part of the hoof unless it's really dead and thick and ready to detach and come out. Keeping the bars trimmed correctly keeps the quarters from flaring. Also, trimming the dead material off of the frog keeps the frog correctly stimulated. As always, trimming to keep the boney column balanced (paying attention to heel height and breakover location) is of primary importance to keep the hoof loading correctly which will prevent quarter cracks and flaring as well as keeping the horse landing flat or slightly heel first. One could probably go on for pages about how to trim, but this is the basic premise. -----Original Message----- From: ridecamp-owner@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:ridecamp- owner@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Steph Teeter Sent: Friday, August 08, 2008 7:25 AM To: ridecamp camp Subject: [RC] barefoot trim Can somebody explain the principles of the bf trim? I've seen some great results, and have a lot of respect for those who can manage to compete and keep their horse's feet in good shape. I'd like to hear a little more of the pro's. Steph (tho I seriously doubt I could keep my horses here barefoot - too much rock on range and trail) =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
