[RC] meeting criteria - terre

From: Michael Maul <mmaul@xxxxxxxxx>
Subject: [RC] meeting criteria

In response to:"I thought a) the aerc rules referred to vet control points and b) the vet manual describes gate into hold with the concept of an vet exam?? (thus AERC does refer to being evaluated fit to continue at holds)"

Perhaps I was not clear in the earlier post. Of course the equine has to be Fit to continue *out* of the hold. Once the pulse requirement is met within 30 minutes of arrival, the horse does not have a set time to finish the vet exam other than before it goes back out on the trail.

I remember being somewhat confused by this discussion the last time around...and I had previously thought I understood it. I DO understand that the horse can be seen by the vet at the beginning of the hold or at the end--or both. But I had always somehow assumed that the horse had to be seen by the vet DURING the hold time. IE, if it is an hour hold, you can't pulse down in 10 mins, go back to your trailer for 2 hours, and THEN present.
I now understand this is wrong; it is not stated in the rules that you cannot, in fact do this. What I don't understand is why you would want to. Even if you had decided to stay longer in the check than the hold time (for whatever reason), wouldn't you WANT your horse evaluated sooner rather than later?
