Re: [RC] Safe??? - Barbara McCrary

I don't think that is what was implied. As a ride manager of 35 years experience, we always deal with #1 and #3. Re: #2, we only have one rural road crossing which is late in the day or at night, and we have a number-taker there who would help with traffic, if there was any. But were we to have a major or dangerous crossing, we would provide traffic control, also.
Of course ride management is responsible for those three items...that's part of presenting a suitable trail for competition. Ride management is not responsible for the riders' behavior or that of fractious horses.

For the interest of the current endurance riding community, when I first became involved in riding endurance, ride management did not feel it necessary to provide water at all vet checks. My first ride had a water crossing at 8 miles from the start, but the VC at 12 miles did not have water, and there was no water for a good many miles after that. I failed to finish that ride because my horse was dehydrated.

So ... you are saying that ride management has no responsibility to see that:
1) The trail is scouted, marked, and obviously dangerous places are routed around.
2) Road crossings have crossing guards if there is a high probability of a collision in their absence
3) Water is provided or available on the trail and at vet checks
etc.

That to me is the meaning of "work to provide a safe, well-run and appropriate environment". I don't think LP was trying to imply that endurance was "safe", or that horses are predictable -- but ride management does have certain responsibilities.

Fascinating theory... But if you look at it from the
rider's perspective - he signed that 'contract' and
with that he was also under the assumption that
ride management would work to provide a safe,
well-run and appropriate environment for this event.

Actually, it states quite clearly in my "contract" that the entrant should in no way consider the event safe, but instead that it is inherently risky.

Anybody who says that it is safe to ride a horse is full of shit.

Riding horses is NOT safe, period.
