[RC] [RC] Surviving a 50 - Roger Rittenhouse

David L comments reminded me of a 50 in the SE, Million Pines. I was bringing Omni back after some issues that were resolving. We did the first 2 loops about 35 miles? . He passed the VC but I was not real pleased - low gut sounds and a bit too dehydrated for me. I think it was about 2 pm with a 6 am start. Not bad, had loads of time. So rather then pull:
I took him back to the pen, stripped the saddle, cleaned him up. Feed and gave elytes ( HOT SE ride). I cleaned up, got a cold beer and sat in the chair watching him. Thinking I may as well pull. I dozed off. Woke up around 3:30 or so. He looked great HR 42, drank about 5 gal, great guts. Well why not try it. Back to the vets for a re-check and we were good to go.
I had a new fresh horse for that last 15 mile loop. I think we were done by 5pm. He was fine. The LONG rest did him good.
Taking a longer rest at the mid point was something I did a number of times during the early years of his 50 milers. It almost back fired at one ride, Summer Breeze a difficult HOT ride - 101 deg and humid in July- we had 5 minutes to spare.
