"In the beginning" LD rides were not recognized at all. Now there are any number of catagories for LDs. Regional miles, regional BCs National miles, national BCs. 1000 mile horse medallions (the one my horse got for 1000 miles LD is prettier than the ones my horses got for Endurance miles in past years) The awards for LD year end points are every bit as nice as those for endurance. Many rides give very comparable awards to all distances. I've managed some Endurance year end placingsover the years and now some LD placings. I'm proud of all of them and the horses that took me there. If you want LD awards get out there and try for what's already there. If you care about a Decade Team listing for LD, then sponsor such, or find some one that will. Help do the record keeping to get it going. That's the way many of the award programs got started. If a few LDs are all you can manage now, so be it. Maybe things will improve later. For Heaven's sake enjoy what you can do now, don't worry about what awards someone else might earn! I get tired of folks complaining about being "looked down on" No one can put you down unless you allow it! On the other hand, why does the idea of someone getting an "LD" award upset some of the the "Endurance" folks? It takes nothing away from the 50s or 100s or multi-day riders. Doesn't shorten the distance or make it any easier. Both groups can just do what they wish to do and enjoy it and quit sniping at each other. IMHO, there should be relative goal and recognition programs in every category and level of this sport, not just those that are doing 50's on up. Geez! I rarely "race," my mare is a classified add special, and my outfit will soon classify for "classic" plates. I basically do endurance on a shoestring. Some seasons I might manage to get in 250 miles, while other seasons I get in only 100. I have a full time job and a non-horsey spouse. The only time I ever buy anything new is when I can't find it second hand. I budget for rides and set my calendar for five rides and I'm lucky if I can manage to get to three. I'm not complaining really. I don't HAVE to do any of this. Endurance fun and challenging for me. The 10-year award is an effort because I've decided to acheive this goal. Ten years from now nobody is likely to know that I made "the list" or even care for that matter. But I will. It's a high bar for me and one I think Agnes and I can achieve. If something happened to Agnes I'd just say, "oh well, this is a horse sport and I did give it my best shot." I'd be a little miffed if I worked this hard only to find that the bar was lowered.
