RE: [RC] 10-year team awards - Kitley, Carrie E Civ USAF AFSPC 30 MDSS/SGSLFWow. That was a slam! Lynn said: "I'd be a little miffed if I worked this hard only to find that the bar was lowered." Who said anything about lower the bar? The point I was trying to make earlier was only that it would be nice if there were similar "goal" programs for LD's as well as 50's & 100's. Not to include LD's with 50's or 100's, etc. Lynn said: "Awards are for achieving outstanding goals. Awards are not given so that everyone "feels like a winner." AERC already has an award for that: It's called finishing." So, finishing an LD isn't outstanding? It IS for some! Wow, it's precisely remarks like yours, that make beginning or LD endurance riders feel deflated and puny. Gotta start somewhere, right?! And if our goal is to continue to rack up miles in nothing but LD's, to just have fun and not presume to ever try a 50, we are treated like underlings by hotshot riders with righteous attitudes like yours. IMHO, there should be relative goal and recognition programs in every category and level of this sport, not just those that are doing 50's on up. Geez! I know one thing, when and IF I ever complete a 50, I certainly won't talk down to LD-ers like some folks do. Thankfully, the majority of riders I have met in this sport have been sweet and encouraging. I rarely "race," my mare is a classified add special, and my outfit will soon classify for "classic" plates. I basically do endurance on a shoestring. Some seasons I might manage to get in 250 miles, while other seasons I get in only 100. I have a full time job and a non-horsey spouse. The only time I ever buy anything new is when I can't find it second hand. I budget for rides and set my calendar for five rides and I'm lucky if I can manage to get to three. I'm not complaining really. I don't HAVE to do any of this. Endurance fun and challenging for me. The 10-year award is an effort because I've decided to acheive this goal. Ten years from now nobody is likely to know that I made "the list" or even care for that matter. But I will. It's a high bar for me and one I think Agnes and I can achieve. If something happened to Agnes I'd just say, "oh well, this is a horse sport and I did give it my best shot." I'd be a little miffed if I worked this hard only to find that the bar was lowered. Awards are for achieving outstanding goals. Awards are not given so that everyone "feels like a winner." AERC already has an award for that: It's called finishing. If someone wants to sponsor a 10-year goal for LD's, or a ten-year award for a horse, there is nothing to stop them. I'd just like to say, thanks Karen Chatton, for giving me a challenging goal that I am pretty sure Agnes and I can acheive.
