They did have the roads & tracks at that time, but I don't remember any steeplechase portion.Your post really makes a lot of sense. I've read other posts regarding eventing about "don't push your horse too hard", etc., but the difference you describe between the long format and the new format seems to me to be the foundation for the problems modern eventing is encountering. Thanks for an excellent explanation and analysis. (And I agree ... making Endurance an Olympic sport seems to be a really good way to accelerate the changes that most endurance riders don't want.)
