Re: [RC] Man o' War - desertrydr1I once was talking with my brother about horse racing and car racing. I told him I went to the Arab races at the local track, but when they got to the QH races, I left. He told me how much he liked 1/4 mile car races. I told him, "Well, I guess they're great if you have a short attention span." He never really forgave me that comment, brings it up every time I see him.But it's true. Like everything else in this country, horse racing is being dumbed down for the people who can't manage to concentrate on anything for more than a minute. jeri -----Original Message----- From: Truman Prevatt <tprevatt@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: heidi@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Cc: k s swigart <katswig@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>; Ridecamp <ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Mon, 12 May 2008 7:55 am Subject: Re: [RC] Man o' War The reason the 100, 200 and the 400 are the most popular events in human track - it starts and within a minute and at most one lap around the track it is over. Lone gone are the days where the "track heros" were sorts like Prefontaine, Shorter, Keino, Ryun. In reality the spectators (and betters) only want to see the sprint at the end for the wire. I suspect it's the same phenomenon in horse racing.

And sadly, the primary reason for shortening the races is the pressure from the betting public. They don't want to sit through a race that might take more than 2 minutes.
