The reason the 100, 200 and the 400 are the most popular events in human 
track - it starts and within a minute and at most one lap around the 
track it is over. Lone gone are the days where the "track heros" were 
sorts like Prefontaine, Shorter, Keino, Ryun. In reality the spectators 
(and betters) only want to see the sprint at the end for the wire. I 
suspect it's the same phenomenon in horse racing.
