[RC] Coggins and pass/fail prepurchases - Kristi SchaafNancy wrote: I purchased an Icelandic mare last year with the agreement that if she passed the vet, I paid for the exam and bought the pony. If she didn't, it was the seller's bill. I like this arrangement because it tends to weed out problem horses before you ever get to the pre-purchase exam. ____________________________ That sounds like a great idea, but who decides if the horse 'passed' the exam or not? Is it common for a vet to pass or fail a horse? Every exam I've been involved in has had the vet listing what she found, but never a 'this horse passed/failed the exam' since that's very subjective even when both the seller and vet know what the intended use of the horse is. A recent example: a friend bought a young horse for the purpose of endurance riding, and the vet found some bone spavin on the flexion test. Neither the vet nor my friend considered that a 'fail', but if "I" was buying the horse, it would be a 'fail' in my eyes because I have a horse that was retired much too young from distance riding due to bone spavin....I suppose if the BUYER got to decide if the results were pass or fail, then it would work. : - ) Kristi ____________________________________________________________________________________ Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo!
