Re: [RC] Bears on the trail - JenYears ago I worked at a riding stables that employed a guy who had worked in the Rockies in Alberta. He worked the packing trails, and he said that the dominant mares will often stare down a bear. They will not back down, but will protect the herd. I remember this very clearly, even though it was over 10 years ago; as I was riding a very dominant mare (2nd in a herd of 40) bareback (she had saddle sores from being used too much) and we came upon a black bear not 10 minutes after he told me about it! Babe (I know, how original of a name - they had 2 with this name, too) stopped cold. She stood there and stared at the bear, giving him quite the evil eye, as all 26 horses filed by her. She let them get a bit of distrance up and then moved on, keeping an eye on him as she walked calmly on. Luckily it was mid-summer when berries were plentiful and the bear was eating well. He never moved from his munching area. Later my friend told me he had seen a mare attack (bluff) a bear to get rid of it. I was hoping he was just trying to freak me out, so I didn't press the issue to see if it was true ;) Jen From: Sheila_Larsen@xxxxxxx Date: 2008/04/14 Mon PM 05:38:48 CDT To: ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [RC] Bears on the trail The Saturday evening before Easter I was heading down 49 into the canyon and had stopped at the first large turnout to rearrange groceries. About two turns later a bear jumped down the steep edge of the road and crossed right in front of the van, it was before the ranger station. I was looking down on the back of that bear praying I wasn't going to hit it, vans are not known for their excellent braking ability. How I didn't hit it I will never know. However on the trail I am very grateful for my "mare that stares down bears." That is her trail darn it and she isn't going move for no stinkin' bear. Horses lend us the wings we lack.
