I don't believe that "breeders" should be licensed, but we should take some note of "licensing" individual horses to breed standards.  Like 100 day stallion testing, and conformation judging. 

 

But then again, AKC didn't do such a great job with dogs, and we would get some not so optimal breed standards.....

 

And then there are people like my ex, who understands how to breed a good horse - doesn't understand how to bring them or want to bring them to their full performance potential once they hit the ground.   They languish in paddocks and stalls and mostly untrained.  That's the part that is irresponsible in my mind.  He is not doing himself or the horses a favor. 

 

I already have three of the horses that he bred and they are incredible animals.  I would love to have one more of his that he bred, in particular my mare's grandson, but I'm already beyond the limits of what is sane for me to own.

No one mentioned anything about putting a stop to professional or preservation breeding ~ But regulation and accountability are needed! Society is going through huge metamorphosis, and the animal-keeping practices of the past need to be revisited - regulated and controlled.

Horses are not like bellbottom jeans (to paraphrase an excellent editorial by RJ Cadranell). You cannot just put them on the shelf when a key bloodline is "out of fashion" and then take them back down in 30 or 40 years when people realize their importance once again. If one does not breed replacements, those genes are lost FOREVER. Not all horses are created equal--thank goodness for dedicated breeders who continue to breed (responsibly, certainly) with vision and foresight, so that many of the genetic treasures are not lost.
