Re: [RC] state fair express unofficial ride results - Keith Kibler

Well Nancy,
Actually we just must have a great attitude, represent our breeds by out preparing the arabians and having our horses rock solid ready. They really do have some
advantages and I understand that. I finished Paul's event tied with a lovely woman on a 20 year old arabian and we rode together the last 8 or 9 miles. We talked about a lot of training issues. I had put in more than 200 miles more training for the event than she had yet at the same speed, my guys hrt rate was still 2o beats more. The fastest I have vetted down on heart rate is about 6 minutes, and that was with walking in. So, we must understand those challenges and deal with them with smart hard work and humor. It is not what happens to you in life that is important, it is how we deal with it.

As far as all four legs being the same on the "trot out". You might have that work for a running walk, but I cant run fast enough (and I am a marathoner) to put my best horse into a rack during a trot out. If your slow gait is a saddle rack, amble or foxtrot (especially a foxtrot) all four legs will not be doing the same.
One of the nicest moments in the race sunday was riding with the leading arabians at about the 25 mile distance and one of them said, "your horse is running in the front and walking in the back!" I got to explain what the foxtrot gait was.

I AM bothered when vets don't make an effort to understand gaited horses--but am not bothered when it takes them a bit longer to mentally process a gaited horse for an anomaly, since we just don't see that many of them.

I've been riding LD's for a couple of years on a little TWH. I tell the vet "This is a little gaited horse, but he usually trots in hand." De. Jen usually answers "Pick a gait, any gait, and stay with it." Others have said "As long as he 's the same on all four legs." At one ride I didn't mention his gaitedness and he trotted out, but gaited back. Mike Foss asked, "A Tenenssee Walker?"

It's really not been that much of a problem.

Don't you still just look at the hip/shoulder fall? I realize the timing
might be different in a gaited horse, but after you get a feel for the
timing, it's still just the evenness of the hip/shoulder fall isn't it?

Not "just" that, no--although that tells you a lot. One also looks for the symmetry of head movement, the evenness of reach and footfall, etc., and if the surface is at all hard, one listens for evenness. I really like examining horses' motion on a firm surface, because often one can HEAR an offness before one can see it.
