I remember riding a loaner horse equipped with snaffle and running martingale. At the time, I was used to riding my old horse with either a snaffle and no martingale. When I tried giving a lateral signal with this loaner horse, it just felt to me as if it got lost because the rein runs through the rings on the martingale, and it was adjusted pretty short. It was an uncomfortable, trapped feeling for me. The German martingale that I have gives me a similar feeling as no martingale.
