I like to be able to move my rein laterally to give cues, and you just can't do that with a >>>running martingale. I couldn't understand this till I saw that you use a hackamore with leverage. I use a snaffle with a running martingale and feel I have plenty of lateral freedom. As far as "right/wrong" I've seen some riders who I have a lot of respect for their riding skills who use them so I don't think it's a sign of incompetence or anything. :-) I've never used one with anything with leverage.
